  • Countersuit In Domain Case
    Compulsory counterclaims amounting to 100 million pesos (US$2.49 million) are being sought by the Philippine League for Democratic Telecommunications, Inc. (PLDTI), in answer to the 1.35 million peso ($33,580) lawsuit of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) for "unlawful use of tradename and unfair competition."

    Network Solutions Inc. of Herndon reported third-quarter net income of $7.3 million (21 cents a share), up 143 percent from $3 million (9 cents) in the same quarter of 1998.

    Citing concerns that the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers is ruling with too much autonomy, the U.S. Office of Advocacy filed a request this week with the group asking it to create a formal accountability statement.
    The government's small business watchdog said it feels ICANN is responsible for taking advantage of its power by putting themselves in a position to evade accountability through the lack of a set of internal rules and regulations

    The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) held their inaugural elections this week, voting in three of the first 18 members of a board that will assume responsibility on important Internet policies such as domain name registration and trademark disputes.
    In the first round of elections, the United States' two candidates for the three seats -- a former Congressman from Washington state and a departing executive of controversial domain name registration company Network Solutions Inc. -- were edged out by candidates from Mexico, Spain and Canada.

  • Domain name disputes likely to be arbitrated
    Under the proposal, which is preliminarily approved by ICANN, everyone who registers a domain name must sign an agreement that they're willing to submit to a "mandatory administrative proceeding" in the event that their right to a domain name is challenged. Details of what the proceedings would entail have yet to be finalized.

    An extraordinary battle over domain names in different languages has broken out between two US web sites. The owners of WhatsHappenin.com have started legal proceedings against Spanish-language site Quepasa.com. They say that the Spanish translation of their domain name is an infringement of copyright, because the two phrases mean the same thing.

    Due to a voting irregularity, the election of the third and final Domain Name Supporting Organization (DNSO) representative to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board of directors has been postponed. But although the final vote has been delayed, early returns indicate that it is increasingly unlikely that a US Representative will be among the first three board members chosen, a source close to the election process told Newsbytes.

    After two years of negotiation with the Internet Registration Authority (IRA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO), Palestine is to get it's own top level domain. The UN General Assembly adopted a special resolution to award Palestine with the suffix .PS.

    A bad trend has been flooding the Internet. People swoop down on famous people’s names and buy them as domain names, sometimes knowing that when the celebrity ends up wanting to create a site for himself and realizes his or her own name is already taken, that person will be forced to pay the owner of the domain a fee to get the name back. It happened recently with Orrin Hatch, and it’s happened again with Don Henley and the Eagles.
